  1. Duolingo is wrong too, how i would write it: «Последний раз у тебя в лагере была тысяча друзей». You were almost right, just swap «была» and «в лагере» places.

  2. you can say that but it’s not feels right. You’ve got (what?) a thouthad friend (where?) in the camp. Why one shoud split this order? It makes no sense to me.
«У тебя было тысяча друзей в лагере» или «У тебя в лагере было тысяча друзей» или даже лучше «В прошлый раз у тебя была тысяча друзей в лагере» или «В прошлый раз в лагере у тебя была тысяча друзей».

Последний in this context is really ususual here

  3. Both are okay, they just have slightly different stress.

была тысяча друзей в лагере — the fact of 1000 friends stressed

в лагере была тысяча друзей — location (camp) stressed

была в лагере тысяча друзей — slightly off, but again location (camp) stressed and this sounds like you had something and then lost it

  4. Am I the only one who thinks that последний раз doesn’t sound quite right, I (personally) would’ve said в прошлый раз

  5. Your sentence is fine in speaking, but if I had to write it down, I’d go for the Duo version or, as per another comment, «Последний раз у тебя в лагере была тысяча друзей». The Duo version seems the most versatile to me formality wise and the way it rolls off the tongue and feels.

Hypothesis: in sentences structured as Topic — Verb — Subject, it’s best to place adverbs in the topic (before the verb) or in the de-emphasised postfix «background» of the sentence (after the subject, like in Duo).

  6. It»s unbelievable that everyone here says you built the sentence right. Yea, you don’t lose the meaning of the sentence, but it is syntactically incorrect. It just doesn’t sound right in Russian.

  7. Simple answer, with duolinguo, parrot back their word order, don’t think too much.
It’s not testing sophistication of word order or nuance, it’s more simple — repeat even if not ideal.
(And i echo others, «последный» is not good here, it sounds like last in the sense of final, not previous)

  8. Duo sounds a bit unnatural to me too. «Последний раз в лагере» represents place and time, no need to separate it with a verb. Maybe it’s just me.

  9. Последний раз у тебя была тысяча друзей в лагере.

Последний раз у тебя в лагере была тысяча друзей.

Последний раз в лагере у тебя была тысяча друзей.

Последний раз в лагере тысяча друзей была у тебя.

Последний раз в лагере тысяча друзей была у тебя.

Тысяча друзей у тебя была в лагере последний раз.

There are some semantic nuances. But all of them are correct. And there are more options)

  10. Both are grammatically correct, but the emphases are slightly different. In your case, information about camp is more important than information about friends; in the duolingo version, information about friends is more important. Also your sentence sounds off.

  11. I see a lot of people posting to this sub trying to figure out if they translated Duolingo tasks correctly. And just as often I see that most of these could be done either way. Russian is quite diverse and complicated, there are many variations of translations you can use to interprete different sentences. Your take is correct as well, just not as used, duolingo really needs to work on adding different versions for these tasks

  12. I think, it’s ok, but «была» and «тысяча друзей» sound more natural together.
Последний раз у тебя в лагере была тысяча друзей.
Последний раз у тебя была тысяча друзей в лагере.
But when you separate them by «в лагере», it sounds a bit off.

  13. Your sentence is fine, however I don’t agree with Duolingo providing «Последний раз», I would instead say «В последний раз», sounds more natural.

  14. It’s wrong, было……. Not была……….

В прошлый раз, у тебя было 1000 друзей в лагере

  15. У тебя реально неправильно написано, если определённые правила составления предложений, которые соблюдать надо, но необязательно, так что сойдёт.

  16. The language structure of sentences is very flexible, but there are some rules that make sentences sound aesthetically pleasing.

So this is the main thing that makes Russian hard. A huge number of options for what words to use, how to build sentences, use the direct or figurative meanings of words. Not even mention 7 cases, 4 nouns declensions and 2 verb conjugations…

  17. Your sentence is correct. As you know, Russian doesn’t have a strict order of words but here it sounds a little bit informal

  18. В последний раз у тебя была тысяча друзей в лагере, try, but i am not sure how much «в»s there is
